China, The Tung (Eastern) Chin (317 - 420) and later dynasties in the south (420 - 589)

During the whole medieval period it was the lower Yangtze region, the former territory of Wu, that remained the stronghold of a series of �legitimate� Chinese dynasties with Chien-k'ang as their capital. In 317 a member of the Chin Imperial family had set up a refugee regime at Chien-k'ang, consisting mainly of members of the exiled northern aristocracy. From the beginning,
